Twenty years ago, Vitech Composites designed its own unidirectional pregging machine for the production of light weight UD tapes. Today we can offer any UD tape from 35gsm to 600gsm with a maximum width of 600mm and up to 300 roving spools.
Epoxy is mixed with its hardener and filmed on a siliconized paper at the desired width and areal weight. A scanner records the film thickness continuously.
Most of our unidirectional (UD) tapes are impregnated with a hotmelt epoxy resin system so called “XB3515” from its original brand name. This REACH complient system is toughened, with a dry Tg of 130°C-140°C .
This process enables the production of UD tapes with any available roving on the market. The most frequently produced are listed below:
– High resistance carbon (UTS50 24K, T700 24K, TR50S 12K, HTS40 24K aero grade)
– Intermediate modulus carbon (IMS65 24K)
– High modulus carbon (HR40 12K)
– Ultra High Modulus carbon (M46JB 12K)
– PITCH based carbon (K13916, K63712, XN80)
– E glass (EC14 2400tex)

Once set up on the UD machine, 4 pairs of calenders transfer the resin film into the fibers in order to impregnate them. The tape is then rolled on a Ø12’’ mandrel and sealed in a plastic bag before boxing
